Graded Pokémon cards UK: PSA vs ACE and how to buy the exact slab
Buying a graded Pokémon card should mean buying one specific slab: the card sealed in that case, with that label and that certificate number, not a vague promise of “a PSA 10 of this character”.
Browse exact graded Pokémon cards or check a slab certificate. Browse the exact photographed slab, then check its certificate before you order.
Who this guide is for
- UK collectors and gift buyers choosing a specific graded Pokémon card
- Buyers comparing PSA and ACE labels without treating either as an investment
- Collectors moving up from sealed products who want to understand certificates first

What “graded” means
Raw cards differ in corners, edges, surface wear, print quality and centring. A grading company typically:
- Checks authenticity and may refuse altered or counterfeit cards.
- Assigns a grade using its published scale.
- Encapsulates the card and prints the grade plus a certificate number on the label.
The certificate lets a buyer compare the slab label with the grader’s database record. It is a useful check, but it should be considered together with the slab label and exact listing photographs. A matching lookup alone does not guarantee authenticity or value.
Exact photographed slab vs a random grade
Some marketplace listings sell “a PSA 10 of Card X” without committing to one certificate. You might receive any qualifying slab from a pool.
The Slab Arena’s graded hub works differently:
- Photographs of the exact slab offered for sale, including the front and reverse on the product page
- Grader, grade and certificate number shown on the listing
- One-off stock for unique certified cards
- The grading company’s certificate remains the record for its grade; The Slab Arena does not re-grade the slab

PSA in plain terms
PSA, or Professional Sports Authenticator, publishes a 1–10 grading scale. Its top card grade is PSA 10 / GEM-MT. PSA also explains that grading includes subjective professional judgement, particularly around eye appeal and borderline cases.
Verify a PSA slab: enter the certificate number in the PSA certificate verification tool. The PSA Population Report records how many items PSA has graded at each grade; it is not the total number of cards printed and does not include ACE-graded cards.
Best suited to: collectors who specifically want a PSA label and will compare the certificate record with the exact slab photographs before buying.
ACE in plain terms
ACE Grading publishes a 1–10 grading scale. Its grading assessment considers the card’s corners, edges, surface and centring, and ACE offers several label styles.
Verify an ACE slab: enter the certificate number in the ACE certificate verification tool. ACE also provides an ACE Population Report for cards in its own database.
Best suited to: collectors who prefer an ACE label or want to compare ACE certificate details and label presentation.
PSA vs ACE: comparison for buyers
A PSA 10 and an ACE 10 are grades from different grading companies. Compare the exact slab, photographs, label, certificate and price rather than treating grades as interchangeable.

Common mistakes
- Treating PSA and ACE grades as interchangeable products
- Buying a pooled or “random 10” when you wanted a specific photographed certificate
- Skipping language and set checks, such as English and Japanese printings
- Using population figures as a promise of scarcity or future value
- Confusing submitting a raw card for grading with buying a finished slab
FAQ
Is a PSA 10 the same as an ACE 10?
No. They are grades from different grading companies with different standards, labels and certificate databases.
Can I check the certificate before I buy?
Yes. Use the PSA certificate verification tool or ACE certificate verification tool, then compare the record with the exact slab label and listing photographs.
Does a grade guarantee future value?
No. A grade is a grader’s opinion about the card at the time it was assessed; it is not a promise of future value.
What if I need to return a slab?
Your cancellation and return options are set out in The Slab Arena’s Refund and Returns Policy. Check the current policy before ordering.
Does The Slab Arena re-grade cards?
No. The certificate on the slab is the grading company’s record for that item.
Should beginners buy graded cards?
Only if you want a specific protected collectible and are comfortable with its current price. Many beginners start with sealed products or a binder plan first.
