EA Sports FC Explained: What Changed After FIFA?
EA Sports FC 24 was the first game in EA’s football series to launch without the FIFA name. This guide explains why the brand changed, which familiar modes and licences remained, and what to check before buying an older or current football title.

EA Sports FC is the continuation of EA’s long-running football game series. The FIFA name ended, but EA kept the core game modes and a large portfolio of separately negotiated club, league, stadium and player licences. FC 24 was the first annual release under the new identity.
Why did EA Sports FIFA become EA Sports FC?
Electronic Arts announced that its football series would move to the EA Sports FC name after the end of its naming-rights relationship with FIFA. The change did not mean EA had stopped making football games or lost every real-world licence.
EA’s partnerships with leagues, clubs, players and competitions are negotiated across many organisations rather than supplied by the FIFA name alone. When EA introduced the new brand, it said the platform would continue with more than 300 licensing partners and the familiar football experiences built over almost 30 years.
In practical terms, the change gave EA an independent identity for its football games while FIFA retained the right to license its own name elsewhere.
What stayed the same after the rebrand?
EA told players that the established modes would continue under EA Sports FC. These included:
- Ultimate Team
- Career Mode
- Clubs, previously known as Pro Clubs
- VOLTA Football
- licensed leagues, clubs, players and stadiums
The exact contents differ between yearly releases, but FC 24 was not a completely unrelated game. It was the next entry in the same development lineage as EA Sports FIFA.
What changed in EA Sports FC 24?
FC 24 introduced the triangular EA Sports FC visual identity and served as the first test of the independent brand. The game continued annual squad updates and mode development while making changes to presentation, player technology and Ultimate Team.
Women in Ultimate Team
FC 24 integrated women’s footballers into Ultimate Team alongside men’s players. Squad chemistry still depended on the relevant leagues, nations and clubs, but the combined player pool broadened the number of possible teams.
PlayStyles
PlayStyles were used to express recognisable player abilities beyond traditional ratings. Some players received enhanced PlayStyles+ traits intended to represent standout strengths.
HyperMotionV
On supported current-generation platforms, EA promoted HyperMotionV as a way to translate real match data into movement and animation. Features tied to newer hardware were not necessarily identical on older console versions.
Did EA lose real teams and leagues?
The rebrand itself did not remove the broad licence portfolio. EA’s original announcement referred to more than 19,000 players, over 700 teams, more than 100 stadiums and 30 leagues, supported by hundreds of partners.
However, licences can still change from one annual release to another. A club, competition, stadium or national team that appeared in FC 24 should not automatically be assumed to appear in every later game. Check the official league and club lists for the specific edition you plan to buy.
Is EA Sports FC 24 still worth buying?
FC 24 can still have value for someone who wants its offline Career Mode, local matches or a low-cost introduction to the series. It is a weaker choice for a buyer whose priority is the busiest online population, current squads or ongoing Ultimate Team content.
Before buying an older annual sports game, check:
- Server status: online features do not run forever.
- Platform generation: PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions may differ from newer hardware.
- Game format: confirm whether the listing is a disc, download code or account-bound licence.
- Current squads: official updates eventually stop.
- Mode availability: some services require an EA account and platform subscription.
A very low price does not help if the mode you want has been retired. For offline play, an older edition can be reasonable; for live competitive modes, the current supported title is normally the safer choice.
Choosing an EA Sports FC game
Choose by mode first
Career Mode and local Kick-Off can be enjoyed without chasing live content. Ultimate Team and Clubs depend much more heavily on active servers, matchmaking and the current player base. Decide which mode matters before comparing editions.
Check the platform generation
A title may carry the same name on two generations while using different technology or supporting different cross-play groups. Read the store description for the exact PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo or PC version.
Standard versus premium editions
More expensive editions often add early access or digital content rather than a fundamentally different football game. Compare the published contents and ignore bonuses that have expired. An old listing may still display a preorder benefit that can no longer be claimed.
Subscription access
EA Play and selected platform subscriptions may provide trials, discounts or catalogue access. Availability changes, and a trial is not always the full game. Verify the current service listing rather than relying on an article about a previous season.
FC Points, gift cards and account regions
FC Points are digital currency used in supported Ultimate Team modes. They should be bought only for the exact platform, account region and game environment described by the store. Do not assume points or balances will transfer between yearly games or between unrelated platform accounts.
Platform wallet credit can fund a game or in-game purchase, but region still matters. A UK PlayStation or Xbox account normally requires compatible UK credit. Digital codes are often non-returnable after being revealed or redeemed, so confirm the product before checkout.
Does your Ultimate Team transfer to the next game?
Clubs, player items, coins and most progress are generally tied to the individual annual title. EA may provide limited carryover options for selected digital currency or settings, but these rules vary. Treat a new yearly release as a new Ultimate Team unless EA explicitly states otherwise.
Can you keep playing after a new FC game launches?
Owning an older game does not automatically stop it from launching when a sequel appears. Offline features can remain usable, but online servers, companion apps, live objectives and transfer markets are separate services with their own support periods.
Why the EA Sports FC name matters
The move from FIFA to EA Sports FC was larger than a logo change because it separated EA’s football platform from the governing body’s name. At the same time, continuity mattered: players expected familiar controls, licences and modes.
That balance explains why FC 24 felt both new and familiar. It launched a distinct brand while carrying forward the structure of the annual series. Future entries can change substantially, but FC 24 will remain historically important as the first game under the EA Sports FC identity.
EA Sports FC FAQ
Is EA Sports FC the same series as FIFA?
It is the continuation of EA’s football game series under a new name. EA no longer uses FIFA as the title, but it retained many separate league, club and player partnerships.
Was FC 24 the first EA Sports FC game?
Yes. EA Sports FC 24 launched in September 2023 as the first annual release under the new brand.
Does FC 24 have Career Mode?
Yes. It includes both player and manager Career experiences, although features differ from later annual editions.
Should I buy FC 24 for Ultimate Team now?
